Critical Language Scholarship Info Session

During this fully funded summer overseas language and cultural immersion program, students receive the equivalent of a year of university level language study. www.clscholarship.org. CLS application workshop will take place on Wednesday, October 23, 3:00 pm.

 

Teach English in Japan

Learn about an amazing opportunity to teach English in Japanese schools. The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program provides young professionals the chance to live and work in Japan. Prior knowledge of Japanese is not required. Applications are due in mid-November.

FLAS Fellowships provide tuition support and a stipend to fund undergraduate and graduate study of language and international/area studies. These are available for selected African, East Asian, Latin American languages. Deadline is December 20, 2019. See flas.ku.edu for more info.

A Global Jayhawk’s Journey: From UN Field Operations to Economic Development Innovator
Special Guest! GIST Alumnus, Carlos Centeno

Alumnus, Carlos Centeno will share how his experiences as a Journalism undergrad and Global & International Studies graduate student laid the groundwork for his nearly decade-long career with the United Nations World Food Program and current position with MIT’s Solve initiative. Carlos’ work with the U.N. World Food Program included disaster preparedness, humanitarian emergency operations, and community development. He has served in refugee camps, tribal areas, and migrant crisis settings in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. In 2019 Carlos joined MIT’s Solve to lead its economic prosperity initiative. This engages leading voices from academia, private/public sectors, and nonprofits to address challenges people face in accessing meaningful work, economic opportunities, and financial inclusion and equality.

Carlos' visit to KU has been organized as part of a series of special activities marking the Center for Global & International Studies' 10 year anniversary and is generously supported by the William Allen White School of Journalism, Department of Political Science, Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies, Department of Spanish & Portuguese, and the Kansas African Studies Center. This talk is part of the International Career Series & Global Food For Thought series. Join us for a FREE light lunch!
