Grants & Fellowships

Support in the form of grants and fellowships is somewhat limited for students in the International Studies Program because the KU Graduate School prioritizes funding toward students in PhD-granting departments; this excludes our students. However, our students are eligible to apply for some scholarships.

Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) Scholarships

Several of KU’s area studies programs receive funds from the US Department of Education to support students pursuing language and cultural studies in less commonly studied areas. The fellowships pay tuition and fees, and provide a stipend. FLAS grants are available both for the academic year and for the summer. The appropriate KU Area Studies Centers administer FLAS fellowships. Announcements of funds to support academic year or summer study are typically made in December and January, with applications due to the appropriate program in February. • Fulbright Grants for graduate study and research abroad are coordinated by the Office of International Programs. The Fulbright Program was created by the U.S. Congress in 1946 is to foster mutual understanding among nations through education and cultural exchanges. Full grants provide round-trip travel, maintenance, a research allowance and tuition waiver, if applicable. Travel grants (to selected countries) provide round-trip travel to the country where the student will pursue study or research. Applications are due in September.
   
• The Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award Foundation has invited the University of Kansas to screen nominations for the Jerry Smith Scholarship for International Studies and the Eddie Jacobsen Memorial Foundation Scholarship. The foundation announces these awards at their annual banquet each May. Applicants must be KU undergraduate or graduate students pursuing courses of study in the general areas of international relations and diplomacy. The foundation places special emphasis on conflict resolution. Nominees may be either U.S. citizens or foreign nationals and must demonstrate potential for a career in or contribution to international service. U.S. students should plan to study abroad during the fellowship period.
   
• The Kansas University Center for Research, Inc. (KUCR) Funding Opportunities website contains links to numerous sources of information on research funding, including opportunities sponsored by KUCR, programs sponsored by other KU entities, as well as government agency funding programs and foundations that sponsor research and training grants.
   
• The University Women's Club offers 5 awards of $1,250 per school year to assist meritorious undergraduate and graduate women students at the University of Kansas. Applications require a completed FAFSA among other materials and are generally due in early February.
