International Programs

The office of International Programs (IP) serves as a conduit and catalyst for achieving the University's international mission. In an interdependent world, KU students, faculty, staff, and administrators must be responsible global citizens. OIP facilitates the complex task of preparing individuals within and outside KU to live, learn, and work in a global society. For more information about the programs, resources, and opportunities available to faculty, students, and staff through International Programs, see: http://www.international.ku.edu

GAP

The Global Awareness Program (GAP) is a KU initiative that recognizes the international experiences of undergraduates. Students can receive transcript certification for activities including study abroad, classes with an international focus, foreign language study, and international co-curricular activities. Global Partners

Global Partners offers a unique opportunity for students, staff, and scholars, both domestic and international, to share in a cultural exchange with a partner that has similar interests. Each international student will be matched with a domestic participant according to language, geographical interest, major, hobbies, and gender. They will meet at their leisure throughout the semester and engage in activities that interest them.

In addition to the individual dynamic of the program, GP sponsors a number of large group activities that allow students to interact with others who share the same passion for internationalism. These events include community service, academic development, and entertainment.

Study Abroad

For more than half a century, the University of Kansas has promoted international exchange as a vital part of a college education. KU has been a national leader in providing low-cost, high-quality study abroad programs; the University offers semester, academic year, summer, winter break and spring break programs in over 60 countries around the world. These programs vary in structure from exchanges and individually arranged programs to group programs led by KU faculty members.

Study abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity whose benefits go far beyond academic learning. Students in study abroad programs develop skills in intercultural communication and problem-solving that are applicable to everyday life anywhere. Students learn to become independent and to take initiative. Students often gain self-confidence, flexibility, perseverance, and appreciation of diversity. An international experience strengthens career opportunities and increases awareness of the interconnected nature of the world. The global character of the economy has prompted more students to learn about cross-cultural linkages first-hand.

These include Fulbright, Boren, Rhodes-Marshall, Truman, and many other scholarships, fellowships, and bursaries. Some of these scholarship opportunities are administered by individual departments, others by units such as International Programs or the University Honors Program. Students interested in such opportunities should explore their options early and often.
