CGIS FLAS

The KU Center for Global and International Studies provides Title VI Department of Education-funded Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships.

DEADLINE FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2013-2014 AND SUMMER 2013 IS FEBRUARY 1, 2013

All eligible KU undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply for academic year and summer fellowships. 
CGIS awards FLAS to students studying Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Hebrew, Hindi, Mongolian, Turkish, & Uyghur

 

 

Undergraduate FLASFLASimage

Academic Year awards provide up to $10,000 for tuition (limited to the actual amount of tuition and fees) and a $5,000 stipend for living expenses.

Summer awards provide up to $5,000 for tuition and a stipend of $2,500 for living expenses.

Eligibility:

  • Students must enroll in second year language courses or above (FLAS are not available to undergraduates in first year language courses).
  • Students must take an approved related culture course each semester.
  • Students must be enrolled at KU or in an approved study abroad program or in an approved domestic summer intensive language program.  Study abroad programs must be pre-approved by the US Department of Education.
  • Students must be studying a qualified language (Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Hebrew, Hindi, Mongolian, Turkish, or Uyghur).
  • Students must be US Citizens or permanent residents.

 

Graduate FLAS

Academic Year awards provide full KU tuition and a $15,000 stipend for living expenses.

Summer awards provide up to $5,000 for tuition and a stipend of $2,500 for living expenses.

Eligibility:

  • Students must enroll in any level of language courses.  Students with near native speaker proficiency will receive lowest priority.
  • Students must take an approved related culture course each semester.
  • Students must be enrolled at KU or in an approved study abroad program or in an approved domestic summer intensive language program.  Study abroad programs must be pre-approved by the US Department of Education.
  • Students performing dissertation research will receive lowest priority.
  • Students must be studying a qualified language (Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Hebrew, Hindi, Mongolian, Turkish, or Uyghur).
  • Students must be US Citizens or permanent residents.

The deadline is February 1, 2013. Online Applications will be available through the KU FLAS website: www.flas.ku.edu

Graduate fellowships are available regardless of language level to be studied.  Undergraduate fellowships are not available for first year language study.  If you are applying to study a language for which multiple KU centers offer FLAS fellowships, you may apply to separately to each KU Center offering that language.

Applications must include:

1. The application itself. 

2. Your curriculum vitae/resume.  This also should be attached.

3. College transcripts.  Electronic transcripts are encouraged.  KU Advising forms can be submitted in lieu of KU transcripts.  These should be printed to pdf and attached.  Additionally, photocopies of transcripts signed by a representative of your department are acceptable.

4. Information about the program in which you intend to enroll if not a KU program.  If you plan to study abroad during the academic year or summer or attend a non-KU domestic intensive summer language program, you should attach an electronic copy of the brochure for the program if it is available, or include in your email the website of the program, in English.  You should also include the following information if you are attending a program abroad:

  • A. Total number of weeks of the program
    B. Total number of hours in language study (contact hours) in the program
    C. Projected departure date
    D. Projected return date
    E. Start and end dates of the program
    F. A paragraph explaining why you have selected the program
    G. For summer programs, an airline itinerary.  Your itinerary must comply with the Fly America Act.
  • 5. A two page, double-spaced statement of purpose, which must include a specific description of your educational background and your course of study, as well as an explanation of how your language study will further your career plans.

    6. You must request recommendations from three people.  At least one recommendation letter from a language instructor; the other two letters may come from professors, supervisors, etc. (though not from family members) Graduate students applying for first year language study are encouraged to include a letter of recommendation from a language instructor who can evaluate the applicant’s proficiency in learning languages in general.

    Selection

    The selection committee will make decisions in the spring, and fellows will be notified. The applicant's academic record, statement of purpose, curriculum vitae and letters of recommendation will all be taken into account. The committee will also attempt to make awards to students in a variety of disciplines and professional schools.

    Academic Year and Summer FLAS Programs:

    Most KU Academic Year FLAS are used for study at KU.  Some students do study abroad, and their programs must be pre-approved.  Most summer FLAS are used to study abroad.  However, summer FLAS can be used on an on-campus KU program or at another university’s intensive language program.

    Summer programs must be at least 6 weeks in length and provide at least 140 hours of language class contact.  Summer programs cannot have tuition that exceeds the limit of $5,000.  This limit does not include room and board.

    Arabic: KU Morocco Program, American University in Cairo, CIEE Study Abroad in Amman, Colombia University Summer Language Program in Amman

    Chinese: CIEE Study Abroad in Shanghai, Columbia University Summer Language Program in Beijing

    Mongolian: Intensive Mongolian in Ulaan Baatar

    Turkish: CIEE Study Abroad in Istanbul

    Hindi: KU's Language and Culture in India

    Turkish: University of Wisconsin Language Immersion Institute, University of Chicago (accepts FLAS payments as full tuition)
