Students are encouraged to submit as much of the documentation electronically as possible.  Students should submit their own documents electronically, as well as electronic versions of outside information.  Documents to be submitted in hard copy can be sent or delivered to 318 Blake Hall.

Graduate fellowships are available regardless of language level to be studied.  Undergraduate fellowships are not available for first year language study.  If you are applying to study a language for which multiple KU centers offer FLAS fellowships, you may apply to any KU Center offering that language, and your application will be considered by all centers offering FLAS for that language.  You do not need to submit multiple applications.

    Selection

The selection committee will make decisions in the spring, and fellows will be notified. The applicant's academic record, statement of purpose, curriculum vitae and letters of recommendation will all be taken into account. The committee will also attempt to make awards to students in a variety of disciplines and professional schools.

Academic Year and Summer FLAS Programs:

Most KU Academic Year FLAS are used for study at KU.  Some students do study abroad, and their programs must be pre-approved.  Most summer FLAS are used to study abroad.  However, summer FLAS can be used on an on-campus KU program or at another university’s intensive language program.

Summer programs must be at least 6 weeks in length and provide at least 140 hours of language class contact.  Summer programs cannot have tuition that exceeds the limit of $5,000.  This limit does not include room and board.
